What does Banke Kuku’s “Oceans Collection” and the Ocean have in common?

What do you picture when you think of the ocean? For Banke Kuku, her vision is a collage of aquatic-inspired prints made of dolphins, seaweed, pearls, coral reefs, and an endless expanse of ocean colours. But Banke's "Oceans" collection is more than just an aesthetic ode to the sea—it is a powerful call to sustainable fashion.

Through "Oceans," Banke aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability, especially the critical need to protect marine life and preserve the ocean ecosystem.

The event which held on the 18th of October featured top people from the fashion industry with a front-row seat to the runway where models stunned the audience with the new collection.

For us, one major highlight of the show was seeing the effort put into the models strutting down the runway with their natural hair types, plus hair extensions in coils and curly types. Beyond the runway, several guests also turned up with locs, low-cuts, and braids. This representation is important to our African heritage as it is a way to imbibe in the next generation the importance of being authentic.

Two things stood out in this collection; the prints and the colours. Known for her signature use of prints, she once again wowed with mesmerizing aquatic-inspired patterns creating pieces that are both timeless and modern. From delicate seaweed-like motifs to vibrant coral reef designs, each print was a masterful blend of artistry and beautiful storytelling.

Meanwhile, the colours do not only captivate the eye but also evoke a deep appreciation for what they represent—the ocean.

Banke Kuku delivered what will remain etched in the memories of her tribe and beyond for the rest of the fashion season and we absolutely cannot wait for her next collection.

What do Banke Kuku’s  “Oceans” and the ocean have in common? I’d say it's timelessness and fascinating beauty.
