“In 2018, #JadaPinkettSmith made a tearful admission on her Facebook Watch show, that she was suffering from hair loss; also known as "Alopecia", and that after trying to disguise the hair loss by wearing turbans, she finally decided to chop all of her hair off last year.”
Now over the years, she has given us "Bald and Beautiful" looks that might make you just consider chopping it all off. (Keep swiping to see her #Oscars2022 look and more inspirations)
Also, how can you tackle a form of Alopecia known as "Traction Alopecia", if you have it?
Well keep reading and let's get the full gist.
Shall we?
The word "Alopecia", means hair loss, and is a medical term for bald.
"Alopecia Areata" which #Jada has said that she has, is considered an “immune-mediated” type of hair loss, whereby the immune system is attacking the hair follicles. This condition is regarded as a long term chronic inflammatory change to the hair follicles, whereby because one's immune system thinks the hair follicles are foreign, it then tries to attack them, thereby resulting in patches and clumps of hair loss or thinning.
Depending on the cause of "alopecia areata", it can be treated but not cured, with injected or topical corticosteroids. If the cause of alopecia areata is due to a nutritional deficiency, like iron or protein, obviously you would simply need to correct the deficiencies with supplements or by changing the diet. When it is caused by traction or discoid lupus, if you don’t treat the inflammation on the scalp soon enough, the hair loss can become permanent.
Traction Alopecia on the other hand, can develop from trauma to the scalp; consistently pulling your hair in tight braids, ponytails or any other hairstyle that just keeps pulling your hair basically.
Can this hair loss be reversed? YES!
But hold on.. you have to tackle it early to avoid a permanent condition.
How do you tackle traction alopecia?
1) Change your hairstyle at least bi-weekly. You can always alternate between braids and leaving your hair down
2) Avoid using hair relaxers if you must, or ensure that your hair is only handled by professionals.
3) Avoid tightly pulled hairstyles ALWAYS!
4) Wear wigs with satin wig caps
5) Thin braids are more likely to cause hair loss, so avoid them.
