"Aso ebi" or "Asoebi", which is Pronounced “ASHO EYBEE”, can be defined as Nigerian/African outfits made from "matching fabric" usually picked by the "celebrants/family celebrating", to be worn by a group of people to a party or wedding as a "uniform".

The term "Aso-Ebi" basically is coined from two Yoruba words: "aso" meaning ‘cloth’ and "ebi", which means ‘family’, so Asoebi can be described as a "family cloth" usually worn at events.
The purpose of wearing the asoebi/uniform fabric can be to serve as self-identification with age mates, relatives or friends during these social occasions or funerals.
The tradition waa basically developed as a means of identification for relatives at Nigerian weddings, funerals and other celebrations; and is traditionally worn in Nigeria and some West African cultures as an indicator of cooperation and solidarity during these ceremonies and festive periods.
Wearing a certain "Aso Ebi" identifies the group of wearers. For instance, at a wedding, all the bride’s friends might wear purple and gold, the bride’s family might wear white and gold, and the groom’s friends might wear black and pink... etc
Usually at weddings, the various fabrics for the aso ebi are decided by the bride/bride's family and are then announced to the selected guests, months in advance so they can purchase, and prepare their outfits.
Your outfit can then be sewn in any style you like, and in fact, the more creative, the better!
It just usually has to incorporate the fabric that will be sold and distributed to interested invitees.
Now that we have a clearer understanding of what "asoebi" means, let's dive into the topic and thoughts as shared.
